4 Common AC Problems and How to Avoid Them

Problems that arise with your AC in your Clearwater, Florida, home can quickly escalate the cost of keeping your home cool. During the hottest summer months, you’ll want to ensure your air conditioner system is operating at peak efficiency. There are several common problems that you can run into which will drastically lower your unit’s ability to cool your home. Many AC problems can be avoided altogether with proper maintenance and service. Here are a few of the most common AC issues, and how to avoid them in the first place.

Low Coolant or Refrigerant

If your AC unit is low on refrigerant it will have to work much harder to cool down the room. Typically, the only time an AC unit will run low on coolant is if there is a leak in the system. The band-aid fix for this situation is to add more refrigerant back into the system. However, if the leak isn’t located and repaired by a technician, you’re sure to run into the very same problem time and time again until the real issue is corrected.

Clogged Air Filters

AC units work by drawing in air from the room and passing it through a series of fins that have been cooled by the system. The newly cooled air is then ejected back into the room. The first thing the air passes through in the system is the air filter. This will trap any larger particles of dust or airborne debris which would quickly gum up the system.

Having clogged air filters can lead to several problems all of which reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner. If you notice your system is blowing warm air or air that is warmer than it usually is, it could mean there’s a clogged air filter. Cleaning your filters every few months avoids most of these issues. If you’re doing some renovation work in your home, or it’s particularly dusty, you may need to clean it more frequently.

Faulty Fan Components

With a central whole-home AC unit, your home is cooled when air moves through the air conditioner. Air is forced through the unit with a fan. If the fan or fan belt goes out, you won’t be able to cool your home. While this may sound like a worst-case scenario, replacing the fan or fan belt is a simple fix for a technician. Once your fan is back in working order, your AC unit will go back to cooling your home quickly and efficiently.

The AC Unit is Turning On and Off Constantly or Staying On All the Time

You may notice that your AC will turn on and off several times within a short period of time. Another oddity would be if the AC unit runs constantly while never powering down. This can signify one of several issues with your AC unit.

If the air conditioner is switching on and off rapidly, you could have an issue with your condenser, evaporator, thermostat, or some combination of all three. A faulty thermostat or poorly-placed temperature probe can send your AC into a constant cycle of turning on and off without doing any work to cool the house. Avoid issues with the condenser and evaporator by scheduling regular maintenance to your AC system. It’s much easier to keep it clean than deal with the problems created by dirty or blocked AC components.

If your AC unit stays on all the time, it’s a sure sign that your unit is not operating at peak efficiency. The first thing to do is to ensure your unit is powerful enough to cool the space you’re asking it to. It can be more cost-effective to run a unit that’s powerful enough to handle the task than ask a smaller unit to cover too much space.

Many of the most common AC issues can be fixed easily or prevented altogether with regular maintenance or a tune-up from your provider. Check out our list of available AC services or schedule service with Pinellas Comfort Systems today by calling (727) 315-0791.
